The Big Sky is a permanent installation on the Barangaroo headland opening in 2020. The Big Sky will be a place for contemplation, connection and intergenerational learning. Inviting visitors to connect with Country through seasons, cycles and the circular, co-temporal nature of time, The Big Sky will explore interrelating land, sea and sky stories - and their connection through the constellations of the night sky through immersive technologies. Through a variety of embedded technologies, Indigenous Astronomical knowledges are married with land and sea cultural knowledges through stories, visual interactions and sound art.
Located at Barangaroo Headland, where the Harbour Control Tower once stood, this Miller’s Point area was traditionally known as Coodye. Now named after powerful Cameraygal woman Barangaroo, this is a place of significance for Aboriginal women. The Big Sky project is led from conception to completion with cultural and creative integrity by Indigenous women. It is grounded in cultural knowledges and guided by knowledge holders, Elders and Traditional Custodians.
The Big Sky is a reclamation of place - an honouring of the original significance of this site, of how it relates to other significant sites around and across the harbour, and of the stories and Songlines that connect this place all the way up and all the way down the East Coast of Australia. The project was commissioned by the Barangaroo Delivery Authority, and is now managed by Infrastructure New South Wales (iNSW).
